Hetalia......Licensed!?

That's right!

Hetalia is going to be licensed by FUNiMATION! They're dubbing the 52 episode mini series and releasing it on DVD!

As exciting as this news is, a lot of fans are skeptical, disappointed, and/or foaming at the mouth!

It's common knowledge that a lot of anime fans don't like dubs over subs (if you don't know what subs or dubs are in the context of anime, you may not be on a blog about bathtubs as you previously suspected.)

Anyway, it all depends. Some dubs are decent, even good.
One example would be Ouran High School Host Club.
This dub is fairly well put together, and in my opinion, Vic Mignogna (I think that's how you spell it) does an excellent job playing Tamaki Suou.

But, some dubs are bad.
Take Lucky Star for instance...Very good anime.....dub? Eh.....not so much.
The voices aren't as accurate as one would hope.

So, Hetalia could be good or bad......but I don't think this is the kind of thing that could be in the middle.

Especially when it comes to the specifics about the voice acting.
There is a large controversy about whether or not the accents will be introduced.
Even though the original japanese version does not incorporate any kind of ethnicity to the voices, it is still a possibility that FUNiMATION will add them for, "accuracy"

Look, lets face it.....It's really accurate and all, but lets not screw up a perfectly good anime by making, say, Johnny Yong Bosch use a fake british accent, or have a terrible Russian voice distracting enough to make a two year old say, "what the hell am I watching!?"

I think that the good people at FUNiMATION will know a bad idea when they hear one. That or they could at least check all the online forums......but, hopefully they'll look past all the fan-suggested cast lists.......some of those are disappointing. I mean did it ever occur to the person writing it that maybe people don't wanna hear Canada sound like he should be throwing a red an white ball and shouting, "Pikachu, I choose you!" ?

I don't know all I know is, Hetalia will be dubbed and out on DVD sometime in 2010....
and I'm excited to get my hands on it!

  1. Hai, your post is very informative (BONUS!) but have you watched the English dub recently? It is A-AWESOME! Some of my more purist otaku friends still refuse to watch the Hetalia dub, but the dub is good in this sense - you get to hear the awesome accents :3
Yep, I think Tamaki Suoh's English voice is one of the best dubbing feats I've ever heard.
